The Vardre – Y Faedre

Inspired by the ‘The Vardre’, a volcanic plug/hill above Deganwy and the Conwy river in North Wales I have created a body of work that not only experiments within painting but also the history of this place going back millions of years as well as its context within present day Welsh culture and identity.

Like a fly landing on a shoulder I sit on this hill as though it is a living conscious thing. I wonder at what it has seen, witnessed, even suffered; its relationship with humans scarring it rocks, building their fortresses and now their homes; and what will the future bring when we are gone.
